Sun Kissed Skin:The Kiss of Death

It’s not a myth! Visible signs of aging begin at 25 because the regeneration of skin cells slow down. Key causes of premature  and/or accelerated aging are sun damage and pollutants. Usually, I’m all about being proactive versus reactive. Clearly, I’ve missed the boat on this one! Better late than never.

I know we all love the sun and we’ve all heard we have to wear sunscreen. But why? Protection!  The sun carries radiation known as UV which is badddd for the skin, specifically UVB and UVA.

UVB causes sun burns and skin cancer;  effecting the first layer of skin responsible for skin regeneration daily. Sun or no sun, winter or summer, UVA penetrates deeper into the second layer, which contains the goods like elastin, collagen, fat cells and oil glands, essential to healthy skin. If they don’t work effectively neither does the regeneration process, causing aging, sagging, wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation etc.

So sunscreen is  must! But here’s the catch about good ol’ SPF, it only prevents against UVB.  So what about UVA? Unfortunately, there isn’t one standard of measurement for UVA protection.  So look for the term  ‘broad spectrum coverage’ for UVB/UVA with ingredients such as : Avobenzone, Ecamsule (Mexoryl SX) , octylcrylene, benzophenone and zinc oxide (specific to UVA protection.)

Because protection doesn’t last all day, the rule of thumb is that you should reapply sunscreen every 2 hours. So what do us makeup wearing gals do? Viola, powder sunscreens! However, my research shows that the ingredients  don’t do much for UVA protection. So I would recommend wearing a great facial sunscreen with both UVA and UVB protection before makeup application and reapplying the powder sunscreen every two hours.

Step One:Apply a facial sunscreen before your moisturizer and makeup. The three facial sunscreens I would recommend wearing prior to makeup are  La Roche Posay Anthelios 50+XL Fluide ExtremeBobbi Brow Brightening SPF 50 UV Protective Face Base or Ombrelle Face. All products do not clog pores and have active ingredients that protect from UVA. If I had to choose I would reccommend Ombrelle Face because it is water resistant, protects from additional skin damaging  factors and is more economical than La Roche Posay!

Step TWO: Reapply the facial sunscreen every two hours if you don’t wear makeup. For those who don’t want to disturb makeup use a powder sunscreen such as PeterThomasRoth Instant Mineral Powder SPF 45 or Colorescience Sunforgettable Mineral Powder Sun Protection SPF 50 or SPF 30

What does SPF mean?

Finally some enlightenment! SPF is a measurement of how much longer your skin will keep from burning compared to when you wear no screen. i.e. SPF 15 means that with the product, you’re skin will be protected for 15x longer than when you don’t wear sun screen. An increase in SPF relates to the increase of coverage time rather than coverage quality.

Did you Know?

Tonal discolorations and acne marks never go away because sun darkens them and brings the out.

  1. Great post Shobana! I’m going to try La Roche Posay. I’ve found that Ombrelle Face sunscreen works great under makeup too – not greasy at all.

PS. For Step two you meant hours, not years right? 😉
